Outi Pieski – 'Art comes from the land, it's made for the land' | Tate
Drawing inspiration from her Sámi heritage, artist Outi Pieski creates large-scale textile installations which feature tassels based on traditional clothing. Her work references ‘duodji’, an Indigenous craft practice that was marginalised in the wake of Scandinavian colonialism.
In this short video, watch Pieski as she prepares new work for her exhibition at Tate St Ives.

Sargent's Diva Portrait | Tate
Переглядів 11 тис.День тому

But his dramatic portrait, with Terry holding the crown above her head, depicts a scene that didn't actually occur in Irving's production. Nevertheless, Sargent's painting established Terry as a true Victorian 'diva'. This is an extract from Exhibition on Screen's film John Sin...

The painting (if it is one?) we only get a glimpse of is by far the most powerful thing on display, it looks superbly "from the land... for the land". A great pity we don't see more of it. The installation is moving conceptually and no doubt therapeutically for the artist (I'm not dismissing those things for what they are), but a tad twee aesthetically/imaginatively - more craft than a work of the unfettered, fully-fledged imagination (though I know imagination - the very life-blood of art - is suspect in today's art world).

Putting aside the absinthe and lead poisoning from ingesting his paints, which obviously assume a severe health problem, his childhood and early adulthood and its struggles can almost certainly be put down to his parents. Their high and narrow expectations of him just seemed permanently unattainable. He just wanted to be understood, and as a response his father wanted to have him confined to an asylum - not because of Vincent's health, but because theodorus feared that the family reputation would be tarnished if Vincent wasn't "hidden away"

In a day? It´s simple enough to do in an hour or so. It´s just a few shapes. The proportions don´t matter, it´s not very detailed, only 2d, no shadows, so yeah, that must´ve been pretty quick. It´s just not very good. Just look at those hands. I guess most children can produce something similar. Pablo Picasso could paint. He made some really nice paintings. Maybe he just had a bad day when painting this one or didn´t want to put any effort into it.

It's beetlework?! The painting is a glorious glittering fantasy, yes, but that dress as an artefact, with the cloak...this is an instance of two works of art in conversation, each enhancing the other's presence. Massive props to the curators who got that outfit out and displayed, delicate Indian beetle jewels and all.
